What to include
Four things decide whether a quote is worth anything:
- The address. It determines which crew covers you, whether council overlays apply, and whether travel is involved.
- The tree. Roughly how tall, roughly how wide, and what species if you know it. A photo from a distance showing the whole tree, plus one at the base, beats any description.
- What is around it. House, pool, fence, powerlines, shed, neighbour's glasshouse. This is usually the biggest cost factor.
- Access. How does a person with a wheelbarrow get from the street to the tree? Side gate width, steps, slope, locked gates, a carport across the driveway.
If it is an emergency
A tree on a house, across a driveway or near a power service is not a quoting job. Read the sequence on the emergency and storm damage page first — if powerlines are involved, Energex comes before anyone else, and if people are trapped or injured it is 000.
Before you commit
Two things are worth doing regardless of who you hire. Check whether the tree is protected, because council rules catch out more Brisbane owners than anything else on this site. And ask the contractor for a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance, along with a written scope.

Is the quote free?
Yes, on-site quotes for standard residential tree work are free and carry no obligation. What is not free is a written arborist report, because that is a qualified professional's assessment for council, insurance or legal purposes rather than a price for work. If you need a report, say so up front so the right person comes out.
What should I have ready when I call?
The address, roughly how many trees and how big, what is underneath or beside them, and how someone gets from the street to the tree — side gate width, steps, slope, locked access. Photos help more than descriptions. If you know the tree may be protected or is on a boundary, mention that first, because it changes everything.
How quickly will someone come out?
For ordinary quoting, usually within a few days, and faster in the winter months when crews are not tied up on storm work. After a significant storm, expect delays on everything that is not dangerous. If a tree is on a house or across a driveway right now, say that when you make contact rather than waiting in a queue.
